Helen C. of Sussex, NJ and formerly of Wallington and Passaic, died on December 8, 2012, she was 94. Helen was born in Crucible, PA on May 26, 1918 to Andrew and Mary (Gaypos) Velky. At the age of 16, Helen came to live with family in East Rutherford, NJ so that she could work as a domestic caretaker for children in NYC. On Sept 12th, 1936 Helen married Michael Matash at St. Mary’s Church in Passaic. The couple lived in Passaic until 1962 when they moved to Wallington. Helen worked for many companies throughout her life, including Shulton, Premier Albums, ITT, and retiring from Hoffman LaRoche in the early 1980’s. Her family remembers looking for Helen and finding her at various church Bingo games, playing her “numbers” and her highly anticipated trips to the Atlantic City Casinos. Helen was predeceased by her husband Michael in 1969. She is survived by her loving daughters and their husbands June and Frank Sabat of Sussex, Judy and Raymond Velardo of Saddle Brook. She is survived by her eight beloved grandchildren, her fourteen great-grandchildren, and her newly born great-great-grandson. Helen is survived by her brothers Paul and Andrew Velky, a sister Alice Kifus, and predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.
