My favorite memory of Mr. Baran –
On my first day of college, my roommate, Mark, introduced me to his father, Stanley Baran. With that first impression, one could see that Mr. Baran had much more energy than all four of us freshmen roommates combined.
With his warm smile, Mr. Baran took a quick look at our closet and noticed that there was extra space with the high ceilings. So he took out his carpenter’s tape, and proceeded to measure our closets.
On his next visit to campus, Mr. Baran returned with a custom fabricated pole (straight from his workbench) that allowed another set of clothes to hang in the empty space above. But how were we to reach this clothes rod? – no problem, Mr. Baran had also fabricated an extender hook that allowed us to place and remove the clothes without a ladder. A clever way to double our hanging space – and this was all done in 1974 – four years before California Closets was incorporated to do the same thing across the USA.
This was the first of many chances to see how creative, industrious and helpful Mr. Baran was to all around him. My condolences to the entire Baran family.
Mr. Baran, we will miss you, rest in peace.
