Sean Baran

Stanley was known by different names to different people. To me, his name was Papa. Papa led a remarkable 88 year life and throughout it, there were three major themes that I will always remember him for. Those themes were love, strong work-ethic and service. Love Papa’s life was rich with family and friends and he loved all of us equally. Papa was always there for us during times of need. He was always there to lend a hand, come to a sporting event or work on a project. He loved to spend time with his family and friends and always wanted us try out his inventions. All of you can remember at least one of his inventions. My personal favorite Stanley Baran invention is frozen grapes. Now that I think about it, all of Stanley’s inventions were designed to make his friends and family’s lives a little better or more comfortable or more efficient. He did the things he did because he loved us all. Work-Ethic Papa had the single strongest work ethic of anyone that I have ever met and probably ever will meet. Even in his 80’s, he would get up early every morning and exercise, then it was off to his endless to-do-list of projects and activities. It’s important to note that his work ethic was so great that it extended itself to those around him. Even in the notes he left for us in passing, there was a two page to-do-list of projects that he wanted to accomplish posthumously. Like most of the things in Papa’s life, his work ethic was something he tried to share with and instill in the people he loved. Going over to Papa’s house meant that it was time to think and time to work. I remember that every time I would see him, he always had a puzzle, a challenge or a question that he wanted me to solve. Once you figured out the answer, then you had to do the project. He had challenges for everyone and I’m convinced he did things like this because one of his favorite jobs was to encourage us to be smarter, better and more productive. He demanded that we think things through, take pride in work and always get the job done. That was the code Stanley lived by and that is what he expected of us. Service Papa served in various capacities throughout his life. He served his country in the Navy, taking part in the D-Day, Normandy invasion and the battle of Cherbourg. Later in the Pacific, he took part in the battles of Iwo-Jima and Okinawa. After the war, he became a mentor for a group of Polish War Orphans, teaching them Industrial Arts, shop theory and the American way of life. After having a family, he became a Little League Coach, organized and managed the Boy Scout Troop 44 band of Most Sacred Heart, was a swim instructor and coached AAU swimmers. Later in life, Papa served on the Wallington Centennial Committee, Wallington Seniors Club, Wallington VFW, Wallington Geezers, Clifton Toastmasters Club, Holy Name Society of Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and he was past president of the local AARP and on the executive committee of the local AARP. I mention these things because to Stanley, service was never a burden, but rather an honor and a way of life. These are the major themes in Stanley Baran’s life. Love, work-ethic and service. This is what I will carry with me.
